New Bonus on the Chase Sapphire Preferred

Chase seems to be doing everything they can to get new cardholders today. Earlier we saw a huge new sign up bonus on the World of Hyatt card with 5 Free Night Certificates. Now they are out with an incredible bonus on the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred (full review) is one of the first cards I recommend as someone’s first travel card. It's low annual fee coupled with a great signup bonus and bonus categories make this card a winner.

The new offer is for the standard 60,000 points after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months. But you’ll also get a $300 travel credit when booking through Chase’s travel portal. I value Chase points at 1.7 cents each so the 60,000 points is worth $1,020. Couple that with the $300 travel credit and you’re getting over $1,300 from this card!

Now, this offer is only available through referrals from those who already have the card. I’ve already received the max referral points on this card this year. So if you have a referral, drop it in the comments below. Applying with my link won’t do anything for me other than ensuring you get the additional $300 travel credit.

5x Points on Travel Booked Through the Chase Travel Portal

While this may sound enticing, there are some drawbacks to booking this way. Eligible purchases include airline tickets, hotels, rental cars, cruises, and vacation rentals. There’s an opportunity cost to not booking directly and going through the portal. Not only is it much easier to deal directly with the company who is actually providing that travel but you also will earn points with their loyalty program and have your elite status recognized. That is not the case when booking through Chase’s or any other travel portal. If you have to change your plans or need to rebook, you must reach out to Chase which can be a pain especially when you’re pressed for time. They’re acting as a liaison between you and the travel provider. Its much easier to go straight to the source.

I would 100% book travel for at least $300 with this new credit in this instance though.

$50 Hotel Credit

When you book a hotel through the Chase Travel portal you get a $50 statement credit per cardmember year. This is as simple as it sounds. You could even book (if you can find one) a room for $50 and you would get a $50 statement credit. This really is as good and as easy as it sounds. I’m assuming this will also stack with the $300 travel credit but I can’t find anything that spells this out.

Is it Worth It?

Absolutely. This is the best offer we’ve seen on this card. The Chase Sapphire Preferred should be in just about everyone’s wallets. Unless you’re spending over $10,130 a year on travel, the Chase Sapphire Reserve is probably the better card for you.
