American Express Uber Credits Changing

One of the great perks of having the American Express Platinum and American Express Gold is the monthly Uber credit. For the Platinum you get $200 a year ($15 per month and $35 in December). With the Gold you get $10 per month. This is a use it or lose it credit which gets automatically loaded into your Uber account each month. If you have both the Platinum and the Gold, both credits get added to your account.

Neither of these cards are the best to use for actual Uber spending. That title goes to both the Chase Sapphire Reserve and the American Express Green which get 3x points per dollar on rideshares.

The best part about the Uber credit is that you can use whichever card you want. It didn’t have to be the American Express card which got you the credits.

Now it looks like that is changing.

American Express Uber Credit Will Require Using American Express Card

Starting in November 8th, 2024 you’ll need to select your Amex card as your payment method for trips/orders to utilize your monthly credit. There has been no official communication regarding this but it was first picked up via r/amex on Reddit. The new restriction is showing in the help section of the Uber app, but strangely Uber’s website only shows this for the Gold, not the Platinum. I’m assuming that is a mistake and they just haven’t updated it yet.

This is a disappointing development but not completely shocking. I’m sure American Express didn’t like offering the monthly credit and not getting any additional spending on the card. I’m kind of surprised it has taken this long to implement this change.

Wrapping Up

Starting November 8th, 2024 you will need to use your linked American Express card to take advantage of your monthly Uber credit.
